Trier, Germany’s Oldest City

Porta Nigra View of St. Gangolf Church, Trier

Trier  is so beautiful, the oldest town in Germany and often called by it’s nickname the Rome of the North but this city is so much more to me. Trier is the city where my story begins. It is the city my mother holds still in her heart. The place she calls home even after living abroad for nearly 61 years, it’s where she grew up, where she met and married my father and the city that much of my family still calls home.  This jewel placed gently by the Moselle River has so much to offer to the visitor. This is my first visit to Trier since I was a child so my first post is going to be a bit more personal.

Just Me in Hauptmarkt,Trier

Enjoying the early morning in Hauptmarkt – The Main Market Square in Trier’s city centre and thought maybe you would like to join me for a little walk around this charming place. The Hauptmarkt has been around since the 10th century, was the trade center of Medieval times and appears to still be that way today.  Follow me as I do a little exploring before meeting up with the family.

The market square is a pedestrian zoned area which makes it easy to get around. Below you can see the 1595 St. Peter’s Market Fountain, Petrusbrunnen. Being located in the heart of the city makes it a great meeting spot if you want to venture out on your own and meet up with family and friends later in the day.  It is nearly impossible to get lost so go and explore, there is so much beauty and history to experience.

Walking into St. Matthias Church With My Family

Seeing St. Matthias was on the top of my list of places to visit in Trier. This beautiful church is where my mom and dad were married in 1957. Sixty one years later they are still in love and happily married.  Just a short drive but definitely worth a look.
